WARREN G. KINGSLEY ~ Batavia

Age 92, died peacefully Sunday February 26, 2017 at United Memorial Medical Center. He was Born April 12, 1924 in Middlebury, NY to the late George & Elsie (Payne) Kingsley, also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (Shull) Kingsley; special friend, Ramona Jenkins Rowe; brothers, Edgar (Eleanor) Kingsley, Howard (Ethel) Kingsley; sisters, Muriel (Victor) Phelps, Marian (Herman) Berkmeier; great-nephew, Kurt Kingsley and great-niece, Denise Kingsley

Warren was a veteran of WWII where he served as a pilot in the Army Air Corp. He flew B26 Mid-Range Bombers with his 21st mission over France on his 21st birthday. He then went on to graduate from Syracuse University with an engineering degree. Warren worked as a mechanical engineer for several companies, his "specialty" was carburetors and fuel injection engines. He retired from EVINRUDE in Stuart, FL where he lived until 2012, when he moved to Victorian Manor in Batavia to be closer to his nieces and nephews, always remaining very active, enjoying golf and playing cards.

He is survived by 21 nieces, nephews, 44 great nieces and nephews.

Services will be held privately and Warren will be laid to rest with his beloved wife in Good Shepherd Memorial Gardens, Ocala, FL. Memorials in his memory are suggested to Honor Flight Rochester, Inc. PO Box 23581 Rochester, New York 14692.

Gene E. Schafer ~ Indian Falls 

Gene Earl Schafer, age 65, passed away peacefully at Tidewell Hospice House, Bradenton, Florida on Monday, March 6, 2017.  He was born March 31, 1951 in Batavia, NY, son of the late June (Wright) and John Schafer of Indian Falls also preceded in death by a brother, Carl Schafer and brother-in-law, Jerry Deusenbery.

He graduated from Pembroke High School in 1969 and married his wife Rita (Deusenbery) Schafer in 1971.  His passion in life was truck driving, crossing the country numerous times and visiting almost all of the continental states. He also sold fuel and energy products for Griffith Oil, Burnwell Oil, and NOCO in Western New York. 

He belonged to the Indian Falls Volunteer Fire Department and was an avid NASCAR fan. His favorite driver was retired, #45, Kyle Petty.  For the last four winters, he and his wife enjoyed spending time in Bradenton, FL at Westwinds Village.  He loved doing puzzles and kept up with the news.  

In addition to his wife, Rita,  he is survived by his two children, Colleen Schafer (Kevin Sommer) of Alden and Wendy Schafer- Colvin (Bradford Colvin) of Broadlands, VA,  two grandchildren Emilia and Erik Colvin; brothers; Paul (Carol) Schafer and Lynn (Patti) Schafer; sisters-in law, Donna Schafer, Carol Robinson, Geraldine Deusenbery, Jacqueline (Deusenbery) Thompson, and Cindy (Deusenbery) Wilkinson; brother-in-law, Anthony Deusenbery along with many nieces and nephews.  

The family will be present on Friday, March 10, 2017 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at the Michael Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel, LLC, 4120 West Main Street, Batavia, NY.  A celebration of life service will be 11 am Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Mogadore Chapel, 8063, North Pembroke Road, Batavia, NY and he will be laid to rest in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Corfu, NY.

Karen M. Mann, 56, of Batavia passed away on Monday March 6, 2017 in Alabama, NY as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. She was born on January 10, 1961 in Batavia to the late Donald E. Mann and Virginia (Zietvogel) Mann of LeRoy. In addition to her father, she is predeceased by her husband Charles Smith.

Karen worked for Cooper Vision in Scottsville. She loved to cook and bake, listening to music, drinking her coffee and crocheting most of her grandchildren’s blankets. She was always doing for everyone else and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family and especially her grandkids.

Joseph D. Snyder, 68 of Alexander, passed away peacefully on Wednesday March 8, 2017 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He was born January 3, 1949 in Batavia, to the late Casper “Jim” (Josephine Hendricks) Snyder. Joe is preceded in death by siblings David, Norman (Elsie) Snyder; brothers-in-law Joseph Mazur and Chuck Hephner.

Joe was a man who loved God. He was a carpenter, mechanic and a collector. Joe enjoyed singing, Jeopardy, history and theology.

He is survived by his daughters Kayla Silvernail of Batavia; Jennifer Snyder of Columbia, MD; Julie (Johnny) Zook of Halifax, PA; siblings Joanne Mazur of Attica; Edward (Linda) Snyder of Attica; Kathleen Hephner of Alexander; Dan (Rae) Snyder of East Bethany; sister-in-law Catherine Snyder of Cowlesville, 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Byron - Jerry A. Henry, 72, of Byron, passed away Thursday, (March 9, 2017) at his home, in Byron under the care of HomeCare & Hospice.

Mr. Henry was born May 3, 1944 in Cortland, a son of the late Nelson and Alice (Coffin) Henry.

Mr. Henry enjoyed classic cars, camping, boating, his Harley Davidson, and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is the husband of Audrey (Graff) Henry.  The two were married on July 4, 1998.

Surviving along with his wife is his daughter, Tina (Jesse) Spaulding of Tully; step-children, Paul Burch of Byron, and Amy (Artie) Snell of Elba; granddaughters, Mandie and Morgan Spaulding; step-grandchildren, Tristan, Delilah, Violete, and Seth Snell.

Preceded in death by his siblings, John (late Judy) Henry, James Henry, and Joyce Henry.

Carolyn Gajewski, 84 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Sunday March 12, 2017 at Premier Genesee Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was born August 12, 1932 in Harrisburg, PA to her late parents. Mrs. Gajewski is preceded in death by a son Daniel and three siblings.

Mrs. Gajewski was formerly a member of the Eastern Star. She loved animals, raised Boxers and ran Caradans Kennel.

Robert F. Dagen, 79 of Simpsonville, South Carolina, formerly of South Byron, NY.  He passed away Thursday March 2, 2017 and is survived by his Wife Roberta (Bobbi) Dagen, his sons Mark (Donna) Dagen of Lititz, PA, Mike (Lou) Willwerth of Simpsonville, SC, daughter Vicki Dagen (Buddy) Pieroni of FL.  Also surviving are 6 Grandchildren, 9 Great Grandchildren, 3 Sisters, 1 brother, and several Nieces and Nephews.

Robert was a longtime member of the Batavia Masonic Lodge, a Veteran of the United States Air Force, and the New York Army National Guard, also a Life Member of the South Byron Vol. Fire Co., along with the South Byron United Methodist Church.

Catherine “Catchie” Skye, 94 of the Tonawanda Indian Reservation, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday (March 12, 2017) at her residence.

She was born June 28, 1922 in Alabama, NY, a daughter of the late Simon and Melinda Skye.

Catherine was a member of the Tonawanda Indian Presbyterian Church and enjoyed watching movies and listening to country music. She was a member of the Snipe Clan and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include a niece, Kathy Melissa (Malcom Hill) Smith of Basom. 

She was the sister of the late Clarinda Skye Stevens.

Thomas Edward Dwyer, 79, passed away on March 13, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his family. 

He was born on October 5, 1937 in Rochester, New York to Edward Dennis Dwyer and Margaret Mary (Murphy) Dwyer. 

He graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1955. After high school, he attended John Carroll University where he studied History, was a "lifetime" member of the Thursday Night Study Club and completed the Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Thomas enlisted in the US Army in 1960 as a Private (E-1) and was promoted to Private First Class (E-2) after completion of basic training. Following basic training he was accepted into Officer Candidate School (OCS) as a Sergeant (E-5) at Camp Smith, NY. In 1963 he joined the NYS National Guard as a 2nd Lieutenant and served for 8 years. He was honorably discharged in 1968, achieving the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

Thomas joined his father and brother in the family business, Thomas and Dwyer Shoes.  Along with the business, he enjoyed giving back to his community by serving on multiple community organizations.  Highlights of his community service work include; Past President of the Batavia Area Jaycees, where he was awarded a JCI Senatorship and participated in the establishment of Genesee Community College, Chairman of the United Fund, served on the YMCA Board of Directors, Past President of the Batavia Library Board and St. Joseph’s Home School Association, member and Past president of the Batavia Rotary Club where he was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. Thomas loved and was most proud of his time as an active supporter of the Notre Dame Sports Boosters and Batavia Youth Football.

Thomas was happily married to Janet Doris Dwyer for the past 55 years.  Together they have supported and loved eight children.  Thomas enjoyed playing tennis, golf and watching his children and grandchildren grow up.  Thomas was a member of St. Joseph’s church where he also was an usher and served on many Catholic Charities drives.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Margaret Dwyer; daughter-in-law, Tracey Dwyer; granddaughter, Molly Shannon Dwyer; niece, Anne Dwyer and nephew, Michael Dwyer. 

He is survived by his wife, Janet (George); his children, Dennis Dwyer, Colleen (Patrick) Donegan, Lisa (Todd) Lenhart, Susan (Christopher) Schukin, Margaret (Scott) Niedzwiecki, Kathleen Dwyer, Carolyn (Stephen) Babcock, Brian Dwyer, his brother, John (Jacquelyn) Dwyer; his grandchildren Sean, Meghan, Abygail, Tomasz, Matthew, Mark, Claudia, Elise, Nicholas, Zachary, Anna, Luke, Jordan, Michal, Connor; great-granddaughter Charlotte Mae; sisters-in-law, Julieanne George, Patricia (John Colagrande) Matla and Teresa George; and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret M. “Marge” Mancuso, 93 of Batavia, died at home surrounded by her loving family and care givers on Wednesday March 15, 2017. She was born July 12, 1923 in Batavia, to the late Sydney (Susan Bowen) Gear. Marge is preceded in death by her husband Dominic B. Mancuso; her siblings Sydney, Irving, Elwyn, Marion and Genevieve.

Marge owned and operated Ceramic Bug Studio in Batavia. She brought much joy to her students and customers, teaching needle point, knitting, china painting and ceramics.

She is survived by her beloved daughter Patti (John) Michalak of Batavia; grandchildren Timothy (Sarah), Tamara, John; great-grandsons Aaron, Eli, along with many nieces and nephews.

Oakfield – Mrs. Florence T. Snyder, 92 and 4 months, of Oakfield, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, (March 15, 2017) at Premier Genesee Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, in Batavia.

Mrs. Snyder was born November 10, 1924 in Medina, a daughter of the late Michael and Aniela (Atras) Dubay.

Florence was the longest surviving child of a family of 8.  She was a long time active member of the Oakfield United Methodist Church and ran the Oakfield Thrift Shop for 25 years.  Florence was a caregiver to many in the area and enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, sewing, and crocheting.

She is the wife of the late Arthur D. Snyder who passed away in 1984.

Surviving is her daughter, Grace (Ron) Bilby of Oakfield; a grandson, Kyle Bilby of FL; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Snyder is preceded in death by two children, Susan Snyder in 1965, and Arthur P. Snyder in 1980; four brothers, John Dubay in 1994, Matthew Dubai in 1996, Kazmier Dubai in 1980, and Adam Dubaj in 2003; and three sisters, Agnes O'Kussick in 1996, Jenny Harmer in 2006, and Josephine King in 2002.   

There will be no prior visitation.  A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced.  Burial will be in Alabama Cemetery, Alabama.

 Charles V. Arnold, 71, of Bennington, NY passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 14, 2017 at the Batavia VA.  He was born June 22, 1945 in Batavia, NY to the late George & Clara (Brightenfield) Arnold.  In addition to his parents, Charlie is preceded in death by his brother, George.

Charlie ended his career working at Perry's Ice Cream due to his long battle with Parkinson's Disease.  He enjoyed farming, auctions at Bontragers and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Fran (Montoro) Arnold; his children Todd Arnold of Bennington, Tracy Arnold of Bennington and Terry (Jeff) Picciano of Rochester; siblings Edward (Daryln) Arnold of Corfu, Cathy (Robert) Smart of Corfu, Carol (Edward) Beideck of Akron, Elizabeth Norton of Pembroke; sister-in-law Marlene Arnold of Batavia; grandchildren Cody, Lane, Olivia and Connor, along with several nieces and nephews.

Anita V. Rynkowski, 74 of Batavia, passed away unexpectedly on Monday (March 13, 2017) at Trinity Medical Center in Trinity, Florida.

She was born June 10, 1942 in Batavia, NY, a daughter of the late William and Rose Stachowski Wierzbicki.

Anita was a Registered Nurse and was employed by the former St. Jerome Hospital and Genesee Memorial Hospital prior to her retirement. She was a member of Ascension Parish and the Altar and Rosary Society.

Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Rynkowski of Batavia. Daughter, Patricia (Steve) Zapparolli of Port Richey, FL. Step-daughter, Lisa (Michael) Radesi of Phoenix, AZ.  Sister, Eileen “Butch” (Dan) Rynkowski of Batavia. Also survived by two grandchildren, Christine Long and Matthew Radesi;  great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

MICHAEL J. LIPTAK ~ Batavia

Age 72, went peacefully home to the Lord Thursday evening March 16, 2017 at Highland Hospital in Rochester. He was born September 16, 1944 in Cleveland, OH a son of the late Andrew and Mary (Uhrin) Liptak. 

Michael was a supervisor for many years with the New York State Department of Labor and attended the Batavia Assembly of God Church. He was a selfless man, always doing for others, shown in being an active volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, Samaritan's Purse and giving of his free time along with others in assisting with many area building projects for those in need. He enjoyed playing softball and was a fan of the Cleveland Indians and Ohio State football. Mr. Liptak was a true family man, always putting them first, and his pride and joy were his beloved grandchildren. 

Surviving is his beloved wife of 47 years, Susan (Pelz) Liptak of Batavia; loving daughters, Kristie (Garron) Gianopulos of NC, Rachel (Carl) Schoenthal of Scottsville, Amy (Peter) Dart of Oakfield and Kimberly (Jason) Countryman of Erie, PA; 13 grandchildren; siblings, Andrew (Kathleen) Liptak OH, Paul (late Elfriede) Liptak of OH, Helen (late Charles) Suckow of KY, Thomas (Jacqueline) Liptak of OH, Judith (James) Sledz of OH, Martin Liptak of OH, George (Michelle) Liptak of OH, Mildred (Albert) Delphia of OH, Margaret (Stephen) Quella of OH and Stephen (Charlotte) Liptak of OH along with many nieces and nephews.

James E. “Beef” Soggs Jr. of Batavia, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2017. He was born June 5, 1962 in Batavia to the late James E. Soggs Sr. and Onie R. (Burney) Soggs of Batavia. James “Beef” Soggs was devoted to his faith in God and truly enjoyed and loved being around his family.

James worked for the State Highway Department for 16 years; later in approximately 2013 he purchased a cab company and then sold it in 2016. James was also very passionate about coaching, basketball, baseball and football throughout Genesee County, however he was most passionate about music and singing, as well as coaching youth baseball. James was a mentor to many youth and truly loved each and every child he came in contact with and if you couldn’t find him on a baseball field then you surely could find him singing karaoke or singing in his band Soul Craft. We will miss his vibrant smile and hardy laughter. We love you Beef and you will truly be missed by all who knew you.

Paul V. Rugala, 66 of Batavia, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday (March 16, 2017) at his residence.

He was born October 16, 1950 in Batavia, NY, a son of the late Theodore and Arlene Kaleta Rugala.

Paul was a graduate of Notre Dame High School class of 1968 and was employed by the Daily News and Pennysaver prior to his retirement. He enjoyed nature and loved to fish in various lakes, especially making his annual trip to Canada.

Survivors include his sisters, Jeanne (Joseph) Pero of Batavia and Rita (Howard) Vogl of Florida. Nephew, Joseph James Pero of New York City. Niece, Natalie Childs of Rochester. Also survived by several cousins.

There will be no prior visitation. Family and friends are cordially invited to share thoughts, condolences and fond memories at a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday (April 1st), 11:00am at the J. LEONARD MCANDREW FUNERAL HOME, LLC, 2 BOGUE AVE., BATAVIA. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Russell P. Cessna Jr., 29 passed away unexpectedly on Thursday March 16, 2017. He was born November 17, 1987 in Batavia, to Mary (Ken) Falker of Corfu and the late Russell P. Cessna Sr. Russ is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Everett Rutherford, paternal grandfather Russell O. Cessna, soul mate Tessacca Tundo.

Russell Paul, known as “Pauly” by his aunt Sarah and grandma Rita, loved to read and enjoyed playing guitar. Everyone will remember Russ for his sense of humor and making everyone laugh. He enjoyed hunting, four wheeling and taking his daughter fishing. He was one of 12 out of hundreds of applicants selected for Cornell’s CPEP program and excelled at it. As a memorial please reach out to a youth whom is struggling so their path may be eased from some of the distress.

He is survived by his daughter Natalia Rayne Cessna of Kentucky; sister Heather (Frank) Demmer of Batavia; step-brothers Andrew Falker of Akron; Ben Falker of Corfu; maternal grandmother Rita Mallison of Batavia; paternal grandmother Elizabeth Cessna of East Bethany; along with many aunts, uncles & cousins.

Clarendon/Batavia - Raymond F. Patnode, Jr., 68, of Clarendon, formerly of Batavia, a machinist at Strong Forge & Fabrication, LLC in Batavia, died Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Strong Memorial Hospital, in Rochester.

Ray was born June 3, 1948 in Rochester, a son of the late Raymond F. Patnode, Sr. and Marie (Telfer) Farrington.

He was an avid camper and member of Red Rock Ponds in Hulberton, NY.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara J.  (Doyle) Patnode, whom he married August 13, 1977; 2 sons, Raymond F. (Anna) Patnode, III of Batavia and James R. Patnode of Warsaw; a daughter, Christina M. (Tom) Theis of MD; 4 siblings, Francis R. (Sue) Patnode of Plattsburgh, Linda (Albert) Gibbs of Alexander, Gary (Cindy) Patnode of Basom and JoAnne Hart of Stafford; an aunt, Lucile Telfer of Rochester; a sister-in-law, Mary Doyle of E. Aurora; 2 brothers-in-law, Edward (Sue) Doyle of Palmyra and  John (Patty) Doyle of Elma; 8 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. 

He was the brother of the late Warren Patnode and Judy Patnode and brother-in-law of the late Robert Doyle.   

Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at H.E. Cazenovia - Dr. Conrad Joseph Kubiniec, 79, passed away on March 18, 2017 at the Syracuse VA Medical Center Hospice, surrounded by his family after a valiant 3-month battle with cancer.

He was born on March 30, 1937 in North Tonawanda, New York the son of the late Charles F. and Cecelia (Young) Kubiniec.

He graduated from North Tonawanda High School in 1954. He was a proud member of the University of Buffalo Dental School Class of 1961.  Conrad went on to serve his country as an officer and dentist in the US NAVY at Great Lakes Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois.

Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, Conrad returned to Western NY and opened his dental practice in Batavia.  He practiced dentistry for 40 years, the last 10 with his son, Michael.  While a Dentist, he was elected into the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an International Honorary Dental Organization.  He was a member of the Tri-County Dental Society and the 8^th District Dental Society.

Along with his successful dental practice, he was a member of The Batavia Lions Club, The Batavia Rotary Club and The Batavia Club.  He sang tenor in the Genesee Chorale and appeared in numerous Rotary Shows. He served on the Board of Directors of the Batavia YMCA and AAA of Western NY.  Upon retiring to St. Augustine Florida, he was an active member of St. Augustine’s Sunshine Rotary Club and the St. Augustine Bridge Club. He spent his summer months in Cazenovia, New York.

Conrad was rich with avocations.  He was an American Contract Bridge Life Master. He was an avid long distance runner and completed two Skylon Marathons in Niagara Falls. He ran for years with the Batavia Sunday Morning Running Club.  As an accomplished lifelong bowler, he achieved his goal of completing a sanctioned 300 game. He was a Master Gardener in the Cornell Cooperative Extension in New York and The University of Florida Cooperative Extension in Florida. He voluntarily tended plantings and community gardens in Batavia and at the St. Augustine Bridge Club and helped family, friends and neighbors with plans, plants and labor.

Conrad married Ann O’Grady Kubiniec of Cuba, New York in 1959. They shared 57 years of marriage and, together, they raised three children. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, Dr. Michael (Sharon) Kubiniec of Batavia, Thomas (Juliet) Kubiniec of Cazenovia and Katherine (Kenneth) Dunn of Danvers, MA.  He was the beloved “Grandpa Alligator” to Austin, Robert and Thomas Kubiniec of Batavia, NY, Colton, Hailey and Charles Kubiniec of Cazenovia, NY, Madelyn, Kenneth Conrad and Garrett Dunn of Danvers, MA. He is also survived by his sister Dr. Cathleen (James) Morano of New Britain, PA and two brothers, Charles “Chip” (Janice) Kubiniec of North Tonawanda, NY and Craig (Mary Anne) Kubiniec of St. Petersburg, FL and many cousins, nieces and nephews. 

There will be no calling hours.  A Spring Memorial Service will be held in Batavia, NY on Earth Day April 22, 2017. Further details will be announced. Memorials may be made to the Richmond Memorial Library, Cazenovia Public Library or St. John’s County Library in St Augustine.  There would be no greater memorial than in lieu of sending flowers, to please plant some.
